## Introduction

In times of high uranium market prices, depleted uranium stocks can be assigned a monetary value that can be realized by re-enrichment to natural-equivalent uranium.

For the case of re-enrichment of the depleted uranium, this calculator determines the secondary tails assay, at which the value of the depleted uranium is maximized for given prices of uranium, conversion, enrichment work, and waste management.
It uses the following assumptions:

• the depleted uranium (primary tails) is available as UF6 or U3O8 and is re-enriched to natural-equivalent assay;
• if the depleted uranium (primary tails) is supplied as U3O8, the necessary conversion to UF6 is considered as a liability;
• the re-enriched natural-equivalent UF6 product is sold at market prices;
• the avoided cost for the conversion of the natural-equivalent product from U3O8 to UF6 is taken into account as a bonus;
• the avoided waste management cost for the primary tails (deconversion from UF6 to U3O8, if necessary, and disposal as U3O8) is optionally taken into account as a bonus:
• the waste management cost for the residual secondary tails (deconversion from UF6 to U3O8, and disposal as U3O8) is optionally taken into account as a liability.

The depleted uranium input to be used for re-enrichment (Primary Tails) must be entered in the Material Balance table, either as UF6, U3O8, or as the uranium contained in one of these compounds.

Once the "Calculate" button is clicked, the Optimum Secondary Tails Assay is determined for the actual parameters, and the Material Balance and the Cost Summary are presented for this Optimum Tails Assay.

The Cost Summary shows the cost balance of the re-enrichment process, plus the liabilities given by the primary and secondary tailings.

The parameters used for the calculation can be set in the Cost Parameters and Process Parameters tables. These parameters show reasonable initial values which can be modified as needed. There are no other hidden parameters used in the calculation.

Weight-percent of the fissile isotope uranium-235 in the depleted uranium material that is fed into the re-enrichment plant. Typical values are in the 0.2 - 0.3 wt_% range.
